Friday Fictioneers prompt this week is this photo by Roger Bultot. (Sorry, there was no link for him.). My story is below the picture.
LOVE GROWS ON YOU
Virginia Creeper wasn’t beautiful and was generally considered a nuisance wherever she grew. But she had a kind heart, and when she heard sobbing out by the alley, she crawled over to investigate. She found Barney, the discarded garbage truck, soaking the ground with his tears.
“Barney?”
“I-I-I’ve been thrown away! Dumped here; no one wants me now. Dead motor. And everybody says I-I-I stink!” His sobs were heartbreaking.
Virginia gathered her strength. Stretching, squirming, she pulled herself to the unhappy truck. She reached up, grabbed his bumper, and curled around it, stretching higher and wider until she had completely embraced Barney in a comforting hug.
“Don’t cry, Barney. I love you, and I’ll stick with you forever.”

A heartwarming story of comfort
Thanks, Colline. It’s the only take on the picture that came to me.
So sweet and funny!
Thank you, Gilly. I have Virginia Creeper on my front porch, and it really does take over if you don’t stay on top of it. And it also STICKS to whatever it grows over. But, actually, I think it’s rather pretty.
I love it!
Thank you. Just couldn’t seem to get any other take on that picture.
Great little story and couple with fab imagination loved it Sandra… 😉
Aw… Now they have each other!
Thanks for taking the time to read and comment.
Oh, lovely. I picture plants as being very comforting actually, like they could do no harm. Except for maybe the choking weeds.
The Virginia Creeper that I have growing amidst my flowers can spread itself out quite a ways in a little bit of time. And it has a tendency to stick to what it grows on, so it just seemed to fit the story so well. And the truck does look lonely.
“I love you. You love me.We’re a happy family…”
Barney gets the hug…nice reversal. Now paint the truck purple.
Randy
I thought about that old show when I was writing the story. I haven’t seen it on TV around this area for several years. It is still running?
Dear Sandra,
Hey! I haven’t seen you around these parts for a while. Your take is certainly a different one. I could see it as a children’s book with illustrations. Sweet.
Shalom,
Rochelle
I haven’t had an opportunity to do much recreational writing lately. Even a challenge that I instigated had to be cancelled because I couldn’t keep up. Family responsibilities and trying to make a living just seem to take over sometimes. But this picture just kept calling to me, so I had to do something.
I did think about the children’s story angle as I was writing this. I should probably consider expanding it and see what I can do. I have a great friend who illustrates her own children’s books. Maybe we can collaborate. Or maybe I could use photos. Goodness knows I have enough Virginia Creeper around my yard to get plenty of pictures.
Lovely story!
Lily
Thank you, Lily. And thanks for taking the time to read it and comment.
Awwww…what a sweet story
Thank you, lady.
Sandra, I thought also when I read this darling story that it would be a lovely story for children. It’s so very comforting, and it has a great happy ending. Well written. 🙂 —Susan
Thank you, Susan. I appreciate your encouraging input.
