Friday Fictioneers – 12/13/13 – ‘Anthropology 101’

I feel as if I’ve been darting in and out of Friday Fictioneers lately, but it’s such fun that I don’t want to miss unless I have to. This week I managed to cook up a little something, so you’ll find my story below Adam Ickes’ interesting picture.

Jump over to Rochelle’s blog to check out the details if you’d like to offer your own 100-word story.

 ANTHROPOLOGY 101

My marriage to an anthropologist was educational – and short. Herman insisted we honeymoon on an island he’d studied for years – certain he could convince the cannibalistic natives to help him with his research. I acquiesced.

The ship captain called us fools as he left us on the shore, but Herman insisted he had everything under control.

When the tribe captured us, they bound Herman and carried me to a huge throne. Seems my blond hair was their sign that their goddess had arrived. I’m to be worshiped and given every heart’s desire forever.

Of course, they feasted in celebration of my arrival.

I’ll miss Herman.

Poet on the Loose – 12/8/13 – anything goes

Welcome to the second installment of “Poet On The Loose” poetry writing challenge. This time around, anything goes: You can write a poem with meter and rhyme, a poem with rhyme but no meter, a poem with meter but no rhyme, or free verse. Take your pick – or try all of the forms.

Basics Rules:
Write a poem based on the picture below. Post your poem on your own blog and then post the link to it in the “Comments” section on this page. We’ll let the challenge run until next Sunday, December 15.

I’ll try to come up with one of my own, but to get us started, I decided to post a poem my mother wrote many years ago. It has always been one of my favorites, and it fits this photo very well. It’s below the picture. This particular photo is not mine, but is from a purchased collection. I’ve always found it charming, especially the way the sunlight warms the whole scene.

Here’s your prompt. Have fun.

CAT # 1

WISH I WERE A BUMBLE BEE
~
Now I’m safe high up in this tree
Or could he be fooling me?
He’s gone away far too soon;
Hardly ever leaves ’til noon.

Oh, to bark or snarl or chase
Would take that grin off of his face.
Or if I were a bumble bee,
Bet that cat would be afraid of me!

One little wren don’t have a chance
When that arched back starts to prance.
But I will figure how, some day,
To make him prance the other way.

Oh, for two horns – like a bull;
I’d show him just who had pull.
Or if I were a bumble bee,
Bet that cat would be afraid of me!

Just like a snake in the grass,
Lie and wait for him to pass.
Or to buzz around his ears
Would show up some of his cat fears.

Oh, to sting him on the nose
Sure would keep him on his toes.
Yes, if I were a bumble bee,
That darn cat would be afraid of me!

O Christmas Tree, How Lovely Are Thy Branches

It’s a healing balm to my soul to see Big Blue standing tall against a crystal clear blue sky.

Last year I decided to name my home. Another literature/writing teacher (who has become a great blogging friend) and I were discussing the fact that throughout history, people have named the property that they called home. We decided that, although the properties we own are not particularly large in numbers of feet or miles, they are still the portions of this earth that belong to us and represent us. I, of course want my home to represent more than me. It must also represent an open door to the Lord and His gracious presence because that’s what my life is all about. So I named my home ‘Beulah Rest.’ I was just thinking today that this magnificent tree standing here, against the backdrop of that gorgeous sky, is the perfect picture of rest and of God’s amazing presence in His creation.

Hurry, Christmas!

CHRISTMAS SMILEY TREE - BRIGHTER

To paraphrase the Chipmunks:

Christmas, Christmas time is here.
Time for joy; time for cheer.
I’ve been good, but that can’t last. *
Hurry, Christmas; hurry fast!

*In fact, I’ve been on the brink of naughty several time this week, and it’s just December 7th.

We’re Snowed In …

It’s hard to tell by these photos, but we got about 12 inches, with drifts much higher. That was on top of about 3 inches of ice. Driving has been extremely hazardous. But today, we have crystal clear skies and glorious sunshine: nature’s repentance for dumping on us for the last 24 hours. So we should see things begin to start moving forward — at least a few inches at a time.

A DUMMY’S A DUMMY

Hey, wasn’t that hunk who just left your office Warren Flannigan, the actor?”

Uh … yeah. There are no more mannequins available for the store’s holiday window on Main Street, so I’m signing live actors.”

But the guy dumped you last month for that anorexic, bleached blond who can’t spell his name!”

Yeah, I know.”

So why give him a whole month’s free publicity in your window?”

“I knew he’d sign the contract without reading the fine print that said he’d be wearing green tights, pointed rubber ears, a light-up nose, and a jingle-bell cap.”

Wow … way to go, girl!   And, after all, a dummy’s a dummy, right?”

Thursday’s Lingering Look at Windows — Week 45

I woke earlier than usual a couple of weeks ago, and when I opened my eyes, this lovely play of light and shadow was right in front of me. The sun was at just the right place to cause the corner of the front porch roof to look like artwork against the venetian blinds at the window. I had never seen it this way before, nor have I seen this same display since then. Needless to say, I jumped out of bed and grabbed my camera.
