The Only Beauty

I just had to share this piece by Scott Thomas Summers. It’s one of the most beautiful poems I’ve read in years. In fact, it has inspired me to write a whole article relating to the theme. I’m working on it now, but I don’t want to say anything else about it because I don’t want to interfere with the power of the poem itself.

S. Thomas Summers

Igor, or sometimes Ygor, is a stock character assistant to many types of Gothic villains, such as Count Dracula or Dr. Victor Frankenstein, familiar from many horror movies and horror movie parodies. Although Dr. Frankenstein had a hunchback assistant in the 1931 film Frankenstein, his name was Fritz.”

Igor

He snatches discarded
orange peels

from the kitchen’s
stone floor

and skulks
to the castle tower.

Under a candle’s glow,
he arranges

the peels on a chipped
porcelain plate

so they resemble
a daisy’s petals.

Holding the plate
to his nose,

he breathes
deep, smiling

as he exhales.
Today, it’s the only

beauty he’ll know.
It will be enough.

This poem began as a response to The Daily Post’s writing prompt: “Fireside Chat.”
