His horse had given out two days ago, and all that kept him going was the love of a blue-eyed woman waiting for him beyond that mountain range. Cecilia had promised to marry him as soon as he was released from prison. Eight years could change a woman’s heart … but he knew Cecilia. Her heart could feel his, and those blue eyes would see him as he crossed over the summit.

Well, I hope so. Eight years is a long time.
I started out giving him 6 years, but I thought 8 would give it more emotional impact.
It’s a complex situation. That he has faith she’ll wait is still a lot to ask.
Faith and love sort of have to work together, don’t they? But she’ll be there. I know — ’cause it’s my story, and I like happy endings. 🙂
I love that you left the end completely open… somehow I don’t know what I wish. Part of that is of course that I don’t know what he went to prison for.
Well, first I had it as 6 years, but I wanted to ‘up’ the emotion, so I changed it to 8. But look at it this way: If it’s only 8 years, at least it wasn’t for killing someone or committing some other heinous crime.
A lovely (potential) love story; I hope too, that he’s free of past deeds, she’s waiting, and that he can accept the life she’s lived during those years.
I hope he is not disappointed.
I’m noticing that no one who’s commenting so far is looking at this story with any kind of romantic heart. No one is seeing it from a positive point of view. That’s interesting to me.
I hope he doesn’t find that Cecilia has moved on… Nice take on the prompt.
