WordPress Weekly Photo Challenge: The World Through My Eyes

I didn’t have to worry about all the instructions concerning focus, perspective, etc. in the challenge this week, because my photo has only one object in it — other than the floor beneath it.  This is my new welcome rug. It represents a huge aspect of “the world through my eyes,” because I love the taste and aroma of freshly brewed coffee, and I have one of the greatest love affairs with chocolate the world has ever known.

Coffee and Chocolate are terrific comfort foods, and recent medical studies have proven both of them to be extremely beneficial to our physical health. I chose this rug for my front door entrance because, to me, nothing says, “Welcome” better than a steaming, fragrant cup of coffee and the thick, rich sweetness of great chocolate.  ENJOY!

Sonel’s Black & White Photo Challenge: Nature

Just discovered Sonel’s challenge today and couldn’t wait to take part using these daisies that I photographed just two days ago. When I saw the challenge, I knew this was the photo I wanted to use. Daisies are my favorite flower in the whole world. There’s just something so pure about them, and the black and white study brings out that quality even more. To take part in the challenge, visit Sonel’s blog here:

Poor Ol’ Kaw-Liga

My hometown has its very own “Kaw-Liga.”  I don’t know how many of you are familiar with the humorous Hank Williams song “Kaw-Liga,” but it was extremely popular back in the 1950’s and 60’s in the U. S. It was the story of a wooden Indian (American Indian) who stood consistently in front a store and, unfortunately, fell in love with a wooden Indian maiden who stood at the door of an antique store not far away. When I discovered this carving masterpiece in front of a hometown store recently, I was taken back to the days of Hank Williams and his famous song. I knew I had to share it.

The link below the photo is to a video of a live performance of the song by Johnny Cash and Hank Williams, Jr. (the author’s son) — recorded at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee, when the Opry was still in its original home at the Ryman Auditorium right in the middle of downtown Nashville. That auditorium holds a lot of wonderful memories for me, because my family and I lived in Nashvillle during some of those years, and we attended the Opry and took family and friends numerous times to rub shoulders with the country music greats. This video is my personal favorite recording of the song because it offers so much in the way of atmosphere as the cameras pan the auditorium from time to time.

Even if you’ve never heard the song before, hop over and listen. You’ll enjoy it!

(Should there be anyone reading this post who feels that this subject matter in any way treats Native Americans in a derogatory manner, let me hasten to say that I am Native American and am very proud of that heritage. As such, I am not the least bit insulted by the song or the wooden sculpture, and as far as I’m concerned, that settles the issue.)

June Writing Challenge: More Graphic Art From Terry

Terry Valley had such a great time reading all of your stories from the last writing challenge based on his graphic art that he has sent me another picture – the result of further graphic art work by him. But he wants me to make it clear that he did not actually draw this picture. Rather, he took portions of other works and put them together to create this composite picture. One of his favorite artists is Gustave Dore, whose work is now in public domain in the U. S., and the main characters in this picture come from Dore’s work.

Terry also shared his original intent for the picture and explained what it means to him, but I have posted that well below the picture itself. That way, any of you who want to try your hand at responding to the writing challenge can be free to process what the picture inspires in you and write your story before you read Terry’s purpose and meaning behind it. Or – feel free to read his explanation first.

If you’d like to accept the challenge and write a story, just post it on your blog, come over here, and post your link in the “Comments” section below.

Word Limit is 100-500 words.

No time limit: Write when you feel inspired.

Take your liberty with ideas, but please remember this is a “G” rated blog, so all stories must adhere to that rating. I hope we have a lot of response, and I’m eager to read all the stories. Also, I guess I’d better try to write one as well.

Here’s Terry’s artwork:

TERRY'S GATES OF HELL - CREDITS - LARGER

Terry’s Explanation of What the Picture Means to Him:

“The picture is meant to portray the seriousness of our existence. We are not our own, despite the human pride that says otherwise. We belong to God who created us. If we do not realize this in this life, it will become terrifyingly clear to us at death. The scene shows a human being after his death at the portal to his eternal destiny, represented by a gate set in the unbounded vastness of eternity.

He is on his knees, hands raised in desperate terror, pleading with the giant spiritual being before him who guards the gate to eternity and is pointing at the formerly complacent human being who now realizes – too late –that his complacency has doomed him to eternal fire – which is perilously close and licks all around him and the Angel of the Gate, the Death Angel.

To make the man’s grief and predicament all the worse, in the far distance, behind him, can be seen a single bright star, which represents the glorious and joyous destiny that could have been his. The star is behind him, as is his life on earth; he turned his back on the glorious future that could have been his, if he had not wasted his life on himself instead of living for the One — Jesus — who created him for Himself.

This is the moment of moments in his entire life, the one, last moment that decides his destiny for all eternity. But in truth, that destiny was decided long before, while he was still alive on earth. Now it is too late. Judgment has been set – and it cannot be changed.

That may sound like a lot to see in a single picture, but that is why it was created and what I hope it portrays and communicates.”

WordPress Weekly Photo Challenge: The Sign Says

Exif JPEG

This sign says, “Welcome to this warm, picturesque, deliciously scented neighborhood coffee shop. Come in and relax in our big, cushiony easy chairs, or sit around a table with local friends enjoying specialty sandwiches, delightful Italian pastries, and all you can drink of the most aromatic, richest tasting coffee you’ve ever had.”

But to the people in my hometown, it also says, “Memories are worth holding onto.” This restaurant is the result of several years of hard work by two local physicians who bought the building, which was originally built as a movie theater in the 1940’s. It boasted all the movies by every big-name star in the business — and visits from a few celebrities as well. In its day, it was something the city was proud of and enjoyed with great regularity. However, during the 1980’s and 90’s it declined into a state of disrepair that was tragic to see on our main street.

The two doctors who restored it wanted to offer the community a restaurant, but they wanted to preserve the original intent of the building and the history that belongs to it. So they restored the movie marquee — with the original theater name — and the staircase with the glistening chrome handrail. Around the main eating area, they have hung huge photographs of all the biggest stars of the “golden years” of Hollywood. No one can go into this coffee shop without feeling they have entered the great movie era of the 1940’s and 50’s. It’s a great tribute to memories of another generation that are worth protecting.
