Thoughts on Thanksgiving — Day 3

Decided to post my Acrostic Thanksgiving poem for day 3.

THANKSGIVING

Thursdays come and go; in every month there’s four or five.
Hardly anyone’s attention they demand.
Ahhh, but there’s one month when Thursday is a special day.
November’s got the situation well in hand.
Kinsmen, young and old, along with neighbors, best of friends,
Stop their normal labor briefly and, instead,
Gather close, declare a feast, and celebrate all day
In churches, homes, and civic halls – wherever led.
Voices glad and warm with love fill up the heart and soul,
Inviting those attending to lay burdens down.
Neath autumn’s healthy harvest, tables beckon us – so come;
Giving thanks to God, now let us gather ’round.

FWF – October Challenge 2017 – Day 13: Try

I haven’t been able to keep up with every day of this challenge, but I’m back in the groove at least for today. So here goes. Today’s prompt word is Try.”

MOUNTAIN CLIMBER 2

If there’s something that you want to do, try it.
Even if you think you can’t succeed, try it.
If a cause deserves a battle for it, try it.
Even if you know you’ll lose the battle, try it.
If you’d like to love another person, try it.
Even if they don’t deserve to be loved, try it.

For we never know our measure ’til we try.
Can’t uncover buried treasure ’til we try.
And we’re oft’ surprised with pleasure when we try.

So, for heaven’s sake, stop sitting there and wishing that you could.
Simply grab your gumption, man: give it a try!

FMF October Challenge 2017 – Day 2

Today’s prompt is “tell.”

I’ve chosen to write poetry today. The following is a set of stanzas in cinquain form.

ANGEL CLIP ART- WITH TEXTTELL

Tell me,
Is there a balm
That heals a broken heart?
That comforts and restores a soul?
Tell me.

And please,
Is there a cure
For sickness and disease?
Is there a power strong enough
To heal?

Tell me,
Is there cleansing
From sin’s embedded stain —
A solvent that can purify
All men?

Tell me,
Is there someone
Who knows the truths of life —
Who can be trusted to lead us
Aright?

Oh, yes!
There is a balm —
A cure for soul and flesh —
A purifying solvent for
All sin

And yes,
There is a God
Who came to earth Himself
To pay the price for us and set
Us free.

He bought
Our liberty
With His own precious blood.
He is Himself the way, the truth,
The life.

His name:
Jesus, the Christ.
And everyone who calls
He will receive. Now that you know,
Go tell.

Even though this challenge is titled “five-minute free write,” I am not restricting myself to writing for just 5 minutes. I’m using this challenge to spur myself to write daily after being in a rather stagnate state due to a grievous loss in my life and its effect on my creativity. So as I discipline myself to write something based on the daily prompt, I am allowing myself to continue to write until I feel released each day.

Witty Little Ditty – Daily Post Prompt

GREEN TYPEWRITER - gold

I must compose a witty little ditty.
It’s for the daily posty prompty thingy.
The problem is the prompt’s so very ‘daily,’
But I will meet the challenge of it gaily.

Now, to choose a subject for my ditty.
I don’t want it to sound too flighty-flitty.
Perhaps I’ll write of love — so very pretty,
Or courage in the face of danger — gritty.

No, on the other hand, this little prompty
Is starting now to aggravate my tummy.
So maybe I’ll hold off and have a thinky,
Before I write this posty prompty thingy.

Daily Post Prompt: Witty

Cinquain to a Wise (?) Owl

Exif JPEG

Wise Owl,
I’m mystified
About why you’re thought wise.
Is it your hunting skills, or just
Big eyes?

It seems
That when it comes
To communication,
Vocabulary isn’t your
Strong point.

“Who, Who”?
I mean — Get real —
Those words show ignorance.
Yet men believe wisdom resides
In you?

Ah well,
Still mystified,
I will concede I like
To hear you “sing” while others sleep —
At night.

Also posted for Daily Post Prompt: Leaf.  Since my owl is sitting in a tree with leaves, I figure this little bit of cinquain fits the prompt.

My Darkest Night

`
Exif JPEG

My darkest night has come,
The sorrow is so deep.
My grieving heart’s entombed —
So empty it can’t weep.

The storm around me rages,
And uses up my strength.
While memories and images
Besiege my mind at length.

But through the savage gale,
A voice so sweet and clear,
Rings out and then prevails;
Bids me let Him draw near.

For in His lovely presence,
The howling winds of grief
Stand still. His very essence
Is all-consuming peace.

His light condemns the darkness
And forces its retreat.
The night to dawn must hearken,
And death to Life concede.

Letter To Naughty Nita — Daily Post Prompt: Sympathy

Dear Nita,

PAPER AND PENCIL

I simply have no sympathy for you.
You’ve played loose and wild for many years.
Stolen hearts and broken homes amassed;
You’ve been the fear of many wives for years.

I simply have no sympathy for you.
In my opinion — and in those I hear —
You’ve fin’ly gotten justice rightly earned,
And you’re the one, at last, drowning in tears.

Daily Post Prompt: Sympathy

In Memorium – Daily Post Prompt: Priceless

KENT BUS JRN PIC - with credits
Priceless:

The knitted heart
Of one who knows me best –
Both good and bad – yet loves me still.
True Friend.

Composed in memory of my dearest friend, who went from this life 10 days ago — much too soon and too quickly:  Kent Bartholomew Mann (1957-2017).

So Excited About This Little Book

CAPTURED BY CINQUAIN AMAZON COVER - frontYes, it’s just a little book — only 68 pages — but it’s the first book I’ve ever done that’s totally devoted to cinquain. As most of you, my readers, know, I fell in love with this unique American poetic form a couple years ago, and since then I’ve written cinquain on almost every subject under the sun.

So if you enjoy poetry — and having fun with it — you’ll probably enjoy this book. It was just launched today on Amazon. You’ll find a very short sample on the Amazon site, and many of you have read most of the poems that are in it as I’ve created them and published them individually on this very blog. But so many were written a couple years ago, that I don’t think you’ll find it boring to revisit them —- that is if you enjoy that form of poetry to begin with.

Anyway, you can find the book HERE  in paperback for only $4.95. (I should probably tell you that some of the poems have accompanying pictures, and the Amazon sample shows those pictures in color. However, the actual book has black & white pics.)

Blogging Left Behind – Cinquain

CONSTRUCTION OF LEGO BUILDING

Busy
Both day and night.
No time for normal stuff
Like keeping up to date with blogs.
Sorry.

Hopeful
That very soon
Stressful pace will slow down
And I can visit online friends.
Miss you.

Glaring: Daily Post Prompt

BI-SEXUAL SYMBOL

What a glaring mistake I have made.
But I hadn’t seen Ben for two years.
And he — oops, I mean she — hadn’t said —
Not a word of this change did I hear.

We were meeting old high school classmates:
A reunion of sorts — just a few.
And since Ben Hall and I had been friends,
I was hoping friendship to renew.

But as soon as I entered the room —
I could not see my friend anywhere —
All at once I was grabbed and hugged tight
By this big-bosomed gal with blond hair.

She pulled back and smiled, and I glared.
Bernice Hall was the name on her tag,
Then my brain saw the light, and I said,
“Ben, why have you come here in drag?”

Oh, but no, I was soon to find out
That Ol’ Ben had had surgery done.
Said he just couldn’t resist a change,
Because big-bosomed blonds have more fun.

What a glaring disgrace and abomination we have given place to in our society now. There will be a price to pay, and we will see hundreds of bodies mutilated and hundreds of lives destroyed in the next decade as a result.

This Is The Way We Brush Our Teeth – Daily Post Prompt

TOOTHBRUSHES - PIXABAY

Be sure to use your toothbrush every day.
Or if you use it twice a day, that’s better yet.
Because if you will clean your teeth a lot,
Then when you see the dentist, you won’t have to fret.

Of course, it’s wise to floss as well as brush,
And then, after the flossing, we should always rinse
With something that will kill bacteria.
I guess with all the gunk we eat, it does make sense.

Anyway, I’m giving this advice —
The same advice my mommy always gave to me.
So hopefully, you won’t lose any teeth,
But keep a brilliant smile for everyone to see.
