Friday Fictioneers – 1/10/14 — Free

Yay! I get to take part this week. Our photo comes from fellow writer Dawn Q. Landau. My story is below.

PINK BUILDING ON THE SEA - FF

FREE

Nick jerked awake in the prison’s isolation cell when the earth began to shake violently. An eerie light suffused the night sky outside the high window, explaining the situation well enough:  Mt. Hideki had erupted.

Suddenly the concrete prison complex began to shift and groan, and before he could think how to protect himself, the entire building began to slide down the ridge toward the sea. Momentum from the slide increased pressure, and as it reached the beach, the building broke apart completely. He felt his own cell block stop suddenly, but heard an ear-splitting roar as the remainder of the prison rushed into the angry sea.

He was free.

  1. Dear Sandra,

The first thing that came to my mind was why he’s in prison. Should I be happy he’s set free from injustice or should I make sure my doors and windows are locked? 100 words…so much fun, yet so limiting. You’ve done quite well with yours. 😉

    Shalom,

    Rochelle

    1. I thought about that myself, and I have to admit that if I had taken another day or two to think about it, I might have figured out a way to include that info in the short limit. But lately I don’t seem to be getting things done on time, and have them piling up on me, so I figured if I waited, I’d end up missing out as I did the last three weeks. Maybe I’ll make this a bigger story some day, and we’ll find out.

    1. Thank you, Gilly. The only two things I could think of when I looked at that picture were a prison and an outhouse (outside toilet). I decided I’d have more to say about the prison.

  2. Yes, it’s great to be free! We all can relate to this moving story. I think each person have their version of a prison that they hope to be liberated from. Relationships, problems, heartaches, anything that prevents us from pursuing our happiness & dreams. Happy New Year!

  3. Prison Break was a popular show a few years ago, but this one seems more exciting to me. Of course if i was inside the place might reek like the bathroom Dawn says it was after such a ride.

Hey, don't you dare go away without leaving me a note!
