Friday Fictioneers, here I come again. Now, the rest of you can sit around with Doug with your feet propped up if you want to, but I’m going exploring for an ancient city. Anybody else who would like to try your hand at creating a 100-word story based on the unique picture below – Douglas M. MacIlroy’s picture, by the way – hop over to the FF home place and check out the details of how and why. (Also, hop over to Doug’s site and check out his header: amazing — mesmerizing — see for yourself!)
My story’s below the photo.
HOME
The aged archaeologist sat gazing into the fire, owning contentment for the first time in his 85 years.
He journaled these words: “At age 15, I sat in a classroom gazing at a tablet. Suddenly, it disappeared, and in its place, as through a window, I saw a mountain. I knew it, yet I didn’t. But I knew I’d find the ancient city – this city — carved inside.
“I was born here, but can’t remember how or why I left. I only know it’s beckoned me in my dreams all my life, and I’ve searched the world for 70 years.
“Finally – today – I am home.”

Well, another week has rolled around, and that means another Friday Fictioneers 100-word story challenge. This whole week, the number 1 has not worked on my computer keyboard. I have to take special pains to get it to type onto the page. So I got to thinking that perhaps I could use that as an excuse to say I’m going to have to do a 2 hundred word story instead – because my number 2 works just fine. However, I decided that even Rochelle, with her merciful attitude toward our rather liberal use of the term ‘100,’ would not be inclined to agree. So I bit the bullet and forced my keyboard to type the number 1 against its will.
This week’s prompt photo comes from Danny Bowman. However, due to the nature of my story, I needed to use a totally different photo at the story’s beginning. You will find Danny’s picture at the end, and the reasons will be self-explanatory.

“What are you looking at, Kor?”
“Hmm? Oh, this photograph of Kate’s homeland. She’s kept it over her bed these 12 years that she’s worked at the space station.”
“My, what serene beauty. I’ve never seen anything quite like it.”
“Yes, she grew up on that mountain, and her greatest delight is the thought of returning tomorrow.”
“But … what if …?”
“I know. I reminded her that earth has experienced a decade of atomic warfare. Much of it is beyond repair”
“And …?”
“She insists her mountain will be unchanged … but I … I fear for her a broken heart.”

Well, it’s “Lingering Visions'” fault. I saw her photo for this challenge, and it was so beautiful that I had to stop and gaze at it. That’s when I realized she was talking about Bob and his challenge. I hopped on over to Bob’s place, and the site itself is a work of art and inspiration. I decided to offer my own contribution this week. I call it “Comin’ Round the Bend,” and it shows a most colorful rock formation on top of the Blue Ridge Parkway — in Southeast U. S. It was a very cloudy day, and you can see a rainstorm just starting to move in — which I think adds to the power of the picture. But within minutes, we were enveloped in the storm cloud itself. Hope you enjoy this.

Have you ever watched sunlight caress a mountain? It moves over it slowly … steadily … possessively … eventually spreading its light and warmth into every possible crevice. It rests there as long as possible … moving away unwillingly … continuing to stretch itself … reaching out with lingering fingers of light … trying to maintain contact as long as possible. That’s the way God touches those He loves. Let Him touch you today.

I had to post this simply because it is my favorite place on the face of this earth. I got to spend a very little time there again last week. It is not only my favorite place to be, but it is also the place where my entire “Smoky Mountain Novel Series” was born several years ago. I guess that fact alone would make it pretty special. I plan to post a slide show of quite a few pictures as soon as I have time.
