Down Memory Lane Just For Fun

I’ve had almost no time to write new material for this website lately, so I decided to dig back through some of my old, old flash fiction pieces and post three of them that were written just for fun. My newer followers will not have read them, and I’m betting my readers of many years will have forgotten about them by now. So, hopefully, they’ll give you a little chuckle to lighten your day.

LAST MINUTE DECISIONS

The auditorium was full of guests, the organist waiting for her cue. The best man stood at the door, ready to enter as soon as Carter, the groom, came back inside. He’d just stepped out for some air. Where the heck was he?

Suddenly Carter hurried into the room, passed by his best man, and entered the auditorium. Looking at the guests, he took a deep breath and spoke:

“Sorry folks. Seems my bride eloped with someone else.” He laughed. “She took the car I’d arranged for my own last-minute escape.”

YOU CAN’T WIN ‘EM ALL

Harold slapped the alarm, grabbed the remote and clicked on the TV as the lottery numbers came up. Grabbing his ticket, he checked off the list.

“I won! I won!” He jumped out of bed, stepping on his boxer, Dolly.

“Woof! Woof!” Dolly joined in the excitement.

Barely thinking, Harold threw on clothes and started downstairs. Dolly ran under his feet, and Harold tripped, rolling down the flight in record time. Rubbing is head and his tailbone, he made it to the kitchen to warm up yesterday’s coffee.

The microwave blew a fuse, so he opted for juice, which he spilled on the floor. He bent to wipe it up and dropped his winning ticket into the puddle. And just when Harold thought it couldn’t get any worse, Dolly snatched up the ticket and chewed it to bits.

 A WOMAN SCORNED

“Annie!  You’re attending my wedding?!”

“I’m the planner your fiance hired. Didn’t she tell you?”

“You? My ex-wife?! Why would Debra hire you?”

“Probably because I gave her the best price. She was very concerned that she not overspend.”

“Wow. I didn’t realize that you were over being so angry at me. But you’ve done a beautiful job with the decorations.”

“Thank you. I’ve tried to be very thorough and think of absolutely everything that will make the event perfect.”

“And … uh … you’re sure you don’t still hold it against me about … you know … cheating on you with Debra?”

“Relax, Harry. Everything’s fine. You don’t have anything to worry about. Here, drink this glass of champagne. I’ve poured this one especially for you. Now, drink up, and the next thing you know … it’ll all be over.”

New Christmas Card Designs

Each year I create a few new Christmas card designs to sell. This year I’ve decided on two for sure, and I may have two more by next week. We’ll see. But I thought I’d share the two that are definite.

This first one is an original ink sketch cover, and the inside message reads:
“Wishing you a safe, warm, peaceful Christmas.”

The second design is original watercolor on the front cover. And the inside message reads:
“It’s Christmas —
A time to remember Jesus and all He’s done for us —
and because of what He’s done — to be happy.
WISHING YOU THE HAPPIEST CHRISTMAS EVER!”

Might As Well Throw Out the Calendar

Well, Sundays now just never seem like Sundays
‘Cause church online just isn’t quite the same.
And Mondays don’t seem right ’cause I’m still home
Instead of working; what a lousy shame.

When Tuesday rolls around, I think it’s Thursday
And start to wonder where the week has gone.
By Saturday, I feel it must be Sunday;
Go online to watch church, but it’s not on.

When Sunday finally comes, I’m more than distressed
Because another week has passed me by,
And I recall that plans I’d made for Wednesday
Have come and gone; I missed them. (Heavy sigh)

And now the holidays are fast approaching,
But they won’t be the same for anyone
‘Cause all the rules for shopping, eating, visiting
Require that we abstain from all that’s fun.

I must admit I don’t do well in lockdown.
Is this the paradigm for staying well?
If so, we need to reevaluate it;
‘Cause life worth living’s going straight to hell.

Harvest Time

The fields are ripe for harvest.
Let’s be about our task
To spread the Lord’s great mercy
And love for all who’ll ask.

Let’s tell the world of Jesus
And how He took our sin.
How God’s granted forgiveness
To all because of Him.

Let’s concentrate on loving
The broken and the lost
And demonstrate with actions
God’s love at any cost.

Let’s pray the Lord of harvest
Touch hearts and draw them home.
The fields are ripe for harvest.
Even, so, Lord Jesus, come.

AUTUMN PERFUME

Bonfire:
Smoke drifting by,
Fragrant with scent of leaves
Still crisp and sweet from frost’s kiss.
It’s fall.

AUTUMN SONG

Crunch, crunch.
I love the sound.
My fav’rite time of year.
My walks are filled with song as leaves
Crunch, crunch.

Weekly Smile – 11/2/20

I had a few minutes this afternoon — mainly because I’m putting off getting started on my laundry and dishes — but nevertheless — I thought I’d use those minutes to join in Trent’s “Weekly Smile” fun.

I had a fairly troubling week, but I did smile at least once each day because I had decided to do a series of coffee posts last week. Now, anyone who visits my site very often knows how much I love coffee, and since I decided to challenge myself to post a brand new coffee poem every day for seven days — along with lovely photos of the beverage —  I had something to smile about each day. And I did smile as I wrote each poem.

Frankly, I consider seven smiles in one week a very successful week. So let’s hear it for the happy beverage that sparked my grinner. Yay Coffee!!!

Coffee Is A Poem – Day 7

Well, here we are at day 7 of this series already. This poem will finish up our little coffee adventure. Hope you’ve enjoyed it as much as I have. And today I’ve chosen to use Cinquain — one of my favorite poetic forms — to render my coffee thoughts.

DELIGHTFUL DRINK

Coffee:
Delightful drink.
Beverage of choice world-wide.
Stimulates yet comforts body
And soul.

CHOCOLATE’S BEST FRIEND

I have a stash of chocolate standing by.
I like to keep some extra when I can.
For when I’m feeling jittery or blue,
Chocolate is the most effective plan.

But chocolate works much better with a friend.
A cup of coffee sets it off just right.
Choc’late and coffee are a perfect blend,
Indulging both at once — a great delight!

So now I’m off to put the coffee on
And get out one of my favorite mugs.
Once it’s brewed I’ll curl up with my treats.
Coffee and choc’late are like a comfort hug.

LIFE’S SWEET MYSTERY

Ah, sweet mystery of life, at last I’ve found you.
You’ve made my life a pleasure; that’s a fact.
When all the world’s in tumult round about me,
I just sit back and sip you and relax.
You’re warm and comforting, and your aroma
Is rich and sweet and soothing through and through.
You’re more than just a staple; you’re a blessing.
A day without you, Coffee, just won’t do.

With a tip of my hat to composures, Rida Johnson Young and Victor Herbert.

Coffee Is A Poem – Day 4

THE HEALTHY BEVERAGE

Coffee’s good for many things, according to reports:
It stops a headache fast as any meds.
Science tells us that it can protect from heart disease
And certain kinds of cancer hold in check.
Neurologists have proven coffee quickens brain response
And stress and tension it can help release.
It’s nice to know my favorite bev’rage is so good for me.
I wonder how it works for soaking feet.

HOW TO SPELL COFFEE

C is for the comfort
That comes from every cup.
O for turn the switch ‘ON’ — leave it there.
The first F is for fragrance;
The aroma is unique.
The second F for friends with whom I share.
The first E is for eating
Something yummy with each cup.
The last E for erase: Gone are my cares!

BY THE POT

Drinking coffee by the cup is fine
If my day is going well,
And works getting done on time.
But lately I’ve been having quite a lot
Of days when I need coffee by the pot.

A cup or two a day is pretty norm.
And that satisfies my soul
With its fragrance rich and warm.
But days this year — normal they are not!
So now I’m drinking coffee by the pot.

Coffee Is A Poem – Day 1

How about a week of coffee poems? Are you up for that, Readers???  Well, I need to lighten my mood this week, and coffee does that for me. So get ready for 7 days of “Coffee Is A Poem.”

HAPPY PLACE

The mornings now are frosty;
A nip is in the air.
My favorite month — October —
Is golden everywhere.
And even though I’m bothered
By some aggravating cares,
I have a fine elixir —
Ah, it’s fragrance fills the air:
I’m brewing up some coffee,
And I’ve made enough to share.
I’m yearning for my ‘Happy Place.’
Come, Coffee — take me there.
